GUIDELINES FOR TUFTING IMAGES

Nothing is more important than your finished product!

It’s important to choose a design that works well for tufting to achieve this.

Since not all images translate well into tufted rugs, we have put together some guidelines to help you pick the perfect design.

Size Matters 👀

You want the image to use the full space so the image will be clear and well designed. Keep in mind, not everything that works on the large frame will work on the small frame. Smaller equals difficult details.

·         High-resolution image formats are best. PNG or JPEG files will give the best quality

·         Don’t go over 1920 Pixels wide and 1080 Pixels tall.

·         You want the image to fit within the 30in X 30in or 15in X 15in Frames.

·         You can submit JPEG, PNG, and even a GIF if that is easier.

K.I.S. Principle (Keep It Simple)

Remember, this is an entry level class with a time constraint. Although we have all the confidence in your artistic capabilities we want to set you up for success in this class. Choose a design with clear, bold shapes that are easy to trace. Thick outlines and solid colors are a good place to start.

No Intricate or Detailed Designs

Small details and gradient transitions can be done… with lots of time and practice.. So not best for this class. These details can easily blend together making the finished product look messy. Large well-defined areas work best and can still be given detail.

Avoid Photographs or Watercolor paintings

This is another area where, YES, this can be done, however, it can take days and a very very large canvas. Let’s instead take these photographs and turn them into something more playful. Vectorized images work well to make a cartoonish photo of your pet for example.

Text and thin lines

As the fibers are pushed into the canvas they compete for space. Thin lines and text can easily be distorted. Although this can be fixed in the shaving portion… It is way more fun to not have to. Keep in mind that the size of your rug will play big. Too many characters on a small rug will be very hard to keep well defined. It is best to K.I.S. Anything with more than 5 characters is not a good idea.

Avoid Protruding or Thin Extensions

This includes things like whiskers, tails, spikes, bones.. that have no background. They are difficult to give detail and are known to curl up at the finished product. A quick solutions to this is to give your image a background or even a thick border.

Front Facing Images Please

It is so easy to find an image of an already made rug online…. And that is OK! For best results please use images that are front facing. Images taken at an angle lack perspective. It can lead to your rug being stretched and disproportioned. Again, your finished product is very important.

Finally.., Please submit your design on time.

We strive to make your experience fun and with no hiccups. In order to do this, we need your final design at least 3 working days before your class. This will allow us to communicate possible difficulties and any necessary adjustments with you to have your frame ready when you show up.
